History

The Rough Collies and start of the "Arcot Kennel"

My late grandmother Mary Tweddle was granted the Affix "Arcot" from the Kennel Club in December 1948, although the first Arcot to be registered was the Rough Collie "Arcot Laddie" born on 8 September 1946.  The name "Arcot" came from "Arcot Avenue" where she lived.  The kennel was mainly a Rough Collie kennel from the late 40s to the very early 80s producing 7 English Champions (and some overseas champions), as well as many other CC winners.

The first "Arcot" Rough Collie Champion was made up in 1956, a bitch Ch Antoinette of Arcot.  Between 1956 and the very early 80s more Champions followed ie Ch Alexander of Arcot, Ch Andrew of Arcot, Ch Abelle, Ch Anna, Ch Abelle Helene, and ending with Ch Arcot Anna Jane the Crufts 1981 bitch CC winner.  All of the Rough Collies were shown and owned by my late grandmother and in the later years she joined partnership with my mother and father Jack and Brenda Tweddle.

The Shelties

The first sheltie came to "Arcot" around 1957 (well before I was born).  This was Lorna of Lockhaugh who was sired by Ch Arolla Ebony of Wallerscote and her dam Tinaleigh Tass (Tass was all Riverhill breeding).  My grandmother was more interested in the collies, and never showed the shelties but always kept the line going throughout the years, often using Rita and Bill Henry's Greenscrees line.

In 1978 my grandmother decided to mate the bitch Annity of Arcot to Ch Marksman of Ellendale.  There were 2 puppies in this litter 1 dog and 1 bitch.  As they both looked very promising it was decided that she would run them on, on the condition that I showed them.  At only their 2nd championship show they both won minor puppy dog and bitch respectively, which really give me the showing bug.  At Three Counties Ch Show 1981 under breed specialist Jean Fitzsimmons (Snabswood) "Arcot A Boy" was to become the first "Arcot Sheltie CC Winner" and his litter sister Miss Tinna took the RES CC.  A Boy went on to win 4 RES CCs and Miss Tinna gained her title.

Since I started showing shelties around 1979 I have had many successes in the show ring .  I have made up 2 British champions notably Ch Arcot Miss Tinna and Ch Marnham Melady at Arcot.  I have won CCs with Arcot A Boy and the dual CC winning tricolour bitch Arcot Chocolate Fingers along with many other Arcots achieving Res CCs (around 18 in total),  Best In Shows and Best Puppy In Shows.

I have bred champions for people overseas notably, Norwegian Ch Arcot Black Liquorice, Russian Ch Arcot Just A Moment and Int Ch Arcot Inquisitive, Int Ch Arcot Strike A Pose and Norwegian Ch Arcot Thumbelina.

Life took a turn for the worse in 2011 when my lovely husband Nigel sadly died so showing and breeding is now done on a very small scale.  At present I only have 3 males and one female in the kennel.  I am lucky to have made some close sheltie friends who are like family to me and have kept me going over the last few years.

I have bred quite a few CEA genetically clear dogs notably the late Arcot Snow Patrol and his litter sister Arcot Shall We Dance and her lovely daughter Arcot Time To Dance who is the mother of the current genetically clear stud dogs Arcot Time To Remember (Sable and White) and Arcot Out In The Dark (tricolour).

I had my first judging appointment in 1981 and I awarded CCs for the first time in the UK in 1991 at Darlington Ch Show.  I have had the priviledge to judge overseas and meet many lovely sheltie people along the way in Belgium, Finland, Norway, Italy, Russia and Sweden forging many lasting friendships.  I have also judged at the British Collie and Northumberland Collie Club Open Shows but do not award CC’s in Collies.

Nowadays I get more pleasure seeing the progency of my stud dogs win more than winning myself.  I am especially proud of the legacy that the late Arcot Snow Patrol has left behind and the champions he produced at home and abroad and have happy memories especially when his daughter Ch Mohnesee Remember Me JW won Best of Breed at Crufts 2014 and my own Arcot Time To Remember also won first in his class.

The Beardies

Bearded Collies were introduced to the Kennel around the early 70s and were again in the partnership of my grandmother and mother and father.  The Kennel had quite some success with the Beardies with CC winners and quite a number of Res CCwinners, most notably with Arcot Justin Thyme and Potterdale Serenity of Arcot.
Unfortunately today there are no longer any Beardies left in our kennel.
